This collection of frame loom weavings investigates ideas of heritage, identity, and process as concept through the act of weaving together a series of found materials. I have incorporated acrylic yarn, synthetic hair, and found fibers to reflect the dimensions that compose my identity and experiences as a Black woman living in the South reflecting on her place in Black crafts.

This collection employs braiding and twisting methods that I use on my own hair to reflect the direct visual, historic, and technical connection that Black stylists have to the pantheon of traditional and contemporary textile crafts.

The weavings emphasize ideas of materiality and process rooted in indigenous African Kingdom’s perceptions of art making as integral and interconnected with the synthesis of life itself. The work also serves as a tongue-in-cheek opposition to the shocking fetishization of Black sadness and oppression and rather invites the viewer to investigate the internal workings of the object before them.
